Breaking the Bias this International Women’s Day

Since its onset, International Women’s Day has been a celebration of women’s social, economic, political and cultural achievements. It has been a symbol of recognition for women’s rights to gender equality and parity, which are the fundamentals on which our society can continue to thrive. For us, it has always been a disturbing thing to see how often candidates are judged by different factors like gender, sexual orientation etc before they are identified by their skillset when being interviewed by prospective employers. At Ranium, we understand that equality for women does not mean less equality for men. This is why, when we took up our first employee, Rita Gaherwar, who is now also our Chief Operating Officer, we did so with a bias breaking and skill-merit based approach. The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, #BreakTheBias has as such, always been our cornerstone while we expanded our workforce through the years.

As a company, #BreakTheBias implies for us that we ensure fair treatment for all our employees, prospective or otherwise regardless of their gender or the capacity in which they work. We have crafted a working environment that is conducive to the growth of our employees while also providing them with a very comfortable workspace. With regards to our female employees specifically, we have always been a step ahead in facilitating an atmosphere that will boost their career growth by tackling various aspects that working women have to often deal with in the corporate sector. Even as a company comparatively smaller in size, we have always had an Internal Complaints Committee set up to ensure all grievances from different employees could be answered impartially as per the Government of India directives. Our work with WeVow only went on to strengthen our resolve to cultivate a work culture that breeds development, trust and safety.

WeVow is a platform built by an all-female team of engineers at Ranium. This platform intends to provide people with insight on how sexual misconduct should not be put up with, in an organization. The platform is available across the world and has been adopted by Ranium to keep up with our commitment towards the welfare and safety of our people. We are proud to be associated with WeVow and to have the opportunity to create and contribute towards forming an atmosphere that encourages equality for all.

It is highly gratifying for us to say that since day one we have had a majority of women in our workforce. These women, both current and former employees have always shone just as bright as their male counterparts. They have also, time and again proved that gender bias is just that, the bias and that women are no less capable of fulfilling any role in the corporate world as well. It is also why most of the leadership roles in our company are played by women. While we celebrate this International Women’s Day, we hope to keep thriving as a company with a reputation of being a non-biased, trustworthy, safe and developing institution for all as we move ahead.

Story So Far…

The year was 2012 and I was happily working for a web development company. I had been at this job for more than 8 years and it never came to my mind to go and start my own company. Then in May 2012 one of my close friend put the idea in my mind and encouraged me to quit my job and start my own company. That is when Ranium was first conceptualised.
